A Bit About Me

My name is Laurisse, and I have been working in the mental health sector for a number of years now. My passion is in people; how people experience the world, feel in the day to day, operate in their relationships and coping skills. Whether you're feeling overwhelmed, battling self-doubt, seeking a space to focus on your wellbeing or simply pursuing personal growth by starting therapy you are taking positive steps towards a more fulfilling life. I hope that we can take that journey together working towards creating a you-er you.

I work with an integrative approach, which means I am trained in three different types of therapy: person-centred, cognitive behavioural and psychodynamic. Which methods are used in the sessions is dependent on you. My approach is to work together authentically and collaboratively with you, listening to your unique and wonderful stories. I've helped people from all walks of life navigate issues like anxiety, depression, stress, life transitions and personal relationships.

Reaching out for help can be hard, so I would like to commend you on taking this first step to look into different therapists and try to find the right fit. I wish you all the luck in finding the right person to support you through this journey, and hope to hear from you soon if you think that could be me.

MY VALUES

  • Mental Health, like physical health, needs time care and attention

  • Equality and Equity

  • Critical thinking

  • Ecology and environmental consciousness

  • Intersectionality: being with multiple aspects of one’s reality

  • Abiding by the NCPS’s Ethical Framework

  • Commitment to my continuous professional development and ongoing supervision

HOW I LOOK AFTER MY MENTAL HEALTH

I try to take a balanced approach in life, and therefore think about how I spend my time and what part of me it is serving. I start by thinking about my physical health, the main categories I think about are; food, hydration, sleep and activity. Am I eating a balanced diet, am I hydrated enough, have I slept enough and am I joyfully moving my body? I love being active, from gym classes, playing squash or going for a walk at lunch time, I know movement makes my body feel good.

Next I think about my social needs. I am naturally a social person, so want to make sure I dedicate enough time in my week to spending time with friends, family and calling all the lovely people in my life that face to face is not possible.

One major way I look after my health is by being creative. I love the mindfulness creative activities can bring. I keep a bullet journal every year and enjoy getting lost in making a new page layout or capturing memories.

A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY

My first career was in something entirely different: Finance and Underwriting. I have always had an analytical mind, something that helps me in my psychodynamic practice today, stripping back client’s problems to the ‘bare bones’ material in order for us to discuss deeply and find solutions together. I first applied this analytical mind to mathematics, and still have a deep love for the mindfullness and meditative state that maths can bring (don’t worry I won’t be bringing any arithmetic exercises to our sessions!). However, after a few years of being immersed in the financial world, I realised that it was the wrong application.

I’m a registered member of the National Counselling & Psychotherpay Society (NCPS). My work is fully insured and professionally supervised, in accordance with NCPS guidelines and I adhere to the NCPS Codes of Ethics in my practice.
